Cambridge is often referred to as “The city of squares” as it has a number of squares including Harvard, Inman, Central and Kendall Squares. All are unique in their offerings and layout and have various services for their residents from shopping and dining to some industry. Over the past 30 years or so, firms in the tech industry began playing a large role in the popularity of Cambridge. Companies like Lotus opened up there and were followed years after by biotech companies including Genzyme, Biogen and Novartis. In recent years the Kendall Square area has become home to many additional tech companies including Google, Microsoft and Amazon.
Located on the north side of the Charles River, Cambridge is also home to some of the most well known and prestigious schools in the country. Harvard University is at the heart of Harvard Square and Massachusetts Institute of Technology lies off Massachusetts Avenue by the Charles River. Due to the renown reputation of these institutions, Cambridge is well known around the world.
